CHESTER, Pa. — In the opening game of the tournament, freshman Caring De Freitas opened all scoring when she scooped a loose ball in the middle of the pitch and darted between two defenders for a breakaway try.
De Freitas scored again later in the match and junior Jennese Bacon scored twice, including a late breakaway that she dotted down in the middle of the try zone.
“I tried to see who was in front of me, if I had a defender,” De Freitas said of her opening try. “Or if I don’t have a defender. And if I have one, am I faster? Am I stronger? I saw that the girl was a lot slower than me so I took the gap, stiff armed her and it worked out.”
The Lady Lions, winners of this year’s USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens Championship, have changed their training schedule since that May 22 win over Life University.
“Because we don’t have any classes at this point, we’ve kind of been adopting a two-a-day mode,” Lindenwood coach Billy Nicholas said. “So we’ll have a morning session, we’ll have some lunch. We might do a little video. And we’ll have an afternoon session to end the day. We’ve really been trying to push the pace after nationals and not rest up too much.”
