Perry Baker returns to Team USA ahead of the Australia and New Zealand legs of the HSBC Sevens Series. The reigning World Rugby Player of the Year suffered a concussion in the opening tournament in Dubai, forcing him out of action the following week in South Africa.
"Having Perry back fit is fantastic for the squad. He is World Rugby Player of the Year, deservedly so, and he will no doubt add to our attacking threat and aerial ability. Particularly, he'll complement what we already have on the outside with Carlin [Isles] as well as how both the racehorses operate with Maka Unufe and Martin Iosefo in outside channels."
Making his Series debut is Chris Mattina. He has been blooded with the Eagles before, at Silicon Valley 7s, a non-Series tournament, but this will be his first time on the big stage. The Xavier High School and University of Delaware product replaces Malon Al-Jiboori in the 12-man squad.
Kevon Williams, who was brought into South Africa to spell the injured Baker, will head Down Under as the 13th man, and he’ll only play if needed for injury cover.
The Eagles have a very winnable pool, as they’ll face Australia, Scotland and Canada in Pool D. They are experiencing somewhat of a skid against rival Canada, and they’ll have the chance to put the brakes on that trend in the final match of the group stage.
"Our focus going into pool play will be to concentrate on playing our game to our potential. We know the fluidity of our attack is about getting accuracy from our start points and never taking the basics for granted so that we control the ball."
