The DII College season is now full under way with every conference having kicked off. Several conferences are starting to take shape while in others we got a taste of the competition in each region.

Hurricane Florence wiped out all the games in the Southern Conference and several in the Cardinals Conference. These games will be made up later in the season.

The Great Midwest Conference is starting to take shape. Traditional powers UW-Whitewater and Illinois State moved to 2-0 along with Northern Iowa and Marquette.  All of these squads except Whitewater are in the south division and will be marquee games later in the season.

Marquette has looked strong this season, scoring over 150 points in their first two games.  With a 70-0 win over Illinois Chicago this week, Marquette is gearing up for back-to-back tests with Northern Iowa and Illinois State later this month.

Perhaps the most notable game in the conference took place between Northern Michigan and UW-Milwaukee. Milwaukee was ranked at the end of last season but Northern Michigan scored two late tries to win 28-24.

The New look New England Wide started this weekend and a couple of newcomers picked up big wins. Vermont blanked elite eight squad Hartford 45-0. Another newcomer Sacred Heart, who came from the Tri-State Conference, defeated the Coast Guard 34-14.

Rugby Northeast started with powerhouse Norwich picking up a convincing victory over Bentley. The biggest game in this conference, however, was a one-point affair between Providence and Middlebury.  The Vermont school has been a playoff team since returning to DII but the Friars were able to pick up a thrilling victory this weekend.

Both Principia and St. Louis moved to 2-0 in the Gateway Conference. It has been a disappointing start for last year’s conference winner Pitt State, who fell to 0-2 with a loss to UM S&T.
