The national collegiate playoffs are upon the American rugby world and the results went pretty much as expected. The favorites won and won convincingly, albeit for one closer than expected outcome. In the ramp up to MLR opening weekend on Saturday, Rugby United New York’s match against the Ontario Arrows in Canada was snowed out and the Seattle Seawolves play their only prep match today versus the Prairie Wolf Pack. As for DI club, SFGG upset OMBAC for its second straight loss and Olympic Club dealt another blow to Life West, while Belmont Shore, Norfolk, Rocky Gorge, Washington Irish, the Dallas Reds, Glendale Merlins, and Mystic river all won.

The Round of 16 in the D1A national playoffs saw seven of the eight winning teams surpass 45 points as routs littered the results. Life, Cal, and Lindenwood each scored over 80 points in their victories and St. Mary’s, Penn State, and Army amassed over 50 points in their wins. Navy shut out Indiana, 47-0, and in the closest match of the day, BYU came back with two late tries to beat Arkansas State, 34-23.

The quarterfinals next Saturday will feature the following match-ups: St. Mary’s vs Lindenwood, Penn State vs BYU, Life vs Army, and Navy vs Cal. Locations and start times are to be determined.

For the Pacific Rugby Premiership, OMBAC suffered its second straight defeat with a loss to SFGG, 41-22, Belmont Shore withstood a tough test from Santa Monica, 40-35, and Olympic Club won its second game with a 38-29 victory over Life West.

For the rest of DI club results, the Mid-Atlantic, Red River, and Atlantic North were in action. The Norfolk Blues beat the Pittsburgh Harlequins, Rocky Gorge clocked the Potomac Exiles, and the Washington Irish prevailed over Schuylkill River in the Mid-Atlantic; the Dallas Reds edged the Austin Blacks, the Glendale Merlins cracked the Dallas Harlequins, and the Austin Huns tied the Little Rock Stormers in the Red River; and Mystic River clobbered NYAC, 66-5 in the Atlantic North.
