Cincinnati tops Ohio U.
U.C. pulls away from Ohio U.
University of Cincinnati Rugby Football Club | October 6, 2014
The Bearcats picked up their first MAC win of the season by beating Ohio University 34-24. Both teams needed the victory if they were to have any chance of qualifying for 1 of the 2 playoff spots out of the South Division of the MAC. With the victory UC still has a chance, but may need to run the table in order to qualify.
UC once again came out strong to open the match and dominated territory for the first quarter of play. Led by 8 man Shane Sullivan, the forwards won nearly every scrum and were able to provide a platform for the backs to attack off of. Jimmy Forde was the first Bearcat to break through with a nice cut back try that caught the Bobcats defense flat footed. He missed calculated the strong wind on the conversion and the Bearcats led 5-0. Not long after that score, the Bearcats were within striking distance again. Sullivan picked off the back of the scrum and bashed through the defense and over the try line only to knock on as he attempted to ground the ball. All too eerily familiar with the start of the Dayton match, but the Bearcats buckled down and went again. Sullivans made sure his 2nd tie over the ty line was awarded the try, and Forde made the conversion. O.U. regrouped and caught the UC defense flat footed when a knock on went uncalled and the Bobcats took advantage of the situation with a few quick offloads and a quick try. The conversion fell short and UC’s lead was cut to 12-5. Jimmy Forde added a penalty kick extending the lead to 15-5. UC continued to attack and mounted a sustained drive capped by Inside center Derek Jackson, when he broke through to score the bearcats third try of the half. Ben Bell slotted the conversion and UC led 22-7. Ohio U. was able to steal the ensuing kickoff and after multiple phases and called infringements, O.U. was awarded a controversial penalty try to end the half. Conversion made the score at the half was 22-14.
The 2nd half was filled with excitement as Ohio U. refused to yield. UC lost both 8 man Sullivan and Fly half Forde to injuries and it slowed the attack of UC. Clearance kicks from Bearcats territory were sloppy until freshman Jared Beitman stepped in to fill the role. From about half way UC’s scrum half Anthony Parente saw a gap in the defense around a ruck and bolter for the try line. O.U. defenders hands fell just short of Parentes collar and he centered the try under the posts. Jared Beitman made the conversion and UC extended their lead with a score of 29-14. The Bob cats would not roll over and soon after flanker Wickramasinghe cut through the Bearcts line on a counter play off turnover and ran 40 meters for the try. Conversion missed UC led 29-19. Not long after O.U. scored again cutting the lead to a try. Up by just 5 points UC was able to play in Ohio U. territory for the rest of the match and even scored a try in the corner when Wing Jesse Morgan received a pass from a pick off the back of the scrum. Final score UC 34- OU 24.
UC travels to Louisville this weekend and hosts local rival Miami University October 18th at Brimelow fields. Kickoff will be at 1pm, and we hope to have a big crowd to cheer us on!
