Huntsville Rugby to Host the Second annual "Try for the Cure" Rugby Festival 3-5 October 2014

The Huntsville Rugby Club has been hosting the Heart of Dixie Rugby Festival for over a decade.  The festival was a throwback to when tournaments were more fun, people had a great time, and the emphasis was on sportsmanship and rugby play rather than on wins and losses.  In 2013, after the tragic loss of one of its founding members to breast cancer, they decided to do something special.  The club decided to partner with the Susan G. Komen foundation of Northern Alabama and changed the name to the Heart of Dixie "Try for the Cure" Rugby Festival in memory of Julie Willis, wife of a founding player and founding member herself.

This year, the "Try for the Cure" returns as we honor the many breast cancer survivors connected with the club and sport, worldwide.  Last year's tournament resulted in a donation of $2000 to Breast Cancer, and the club would like to raise that amount by 50% this year to $3000.

The rugby festival, known throughout the South as simply "HOD," has drawn teams from as far west as Los Angeles and Austin Texas, as far South as Florida State University, as far East as Virginia, and as far North as Carbondale, IL.  Teams arrive on Friday night to a welcome reception right there at our private rugby grounds, Rick Cooper Memorial Park, and set up camp for the weekend.  There is plenty of room for camping at our spacious grounds, featuring two regulation pitches and a pavillion for all social activities.  Rather than a straight championship, teams are paired up with teams they don't normally get a chance to play, with the Referees and Tournament organizers voting for the "Best on the Field" awards.  There are awards for "best off the field" as well, so don't forget your costumes and tour themes.  This year will feature an Ancient Rugby Olympics theme with side contests for teams to demonstrate their prowess off the field as well as on; and, the midnight co-ed rugby match is not to be missed!

Teams that are interested in participating in this years HOD "Try for the Cure" should contact Ryan Roof at or can visit our website at for an entry form and more information.  Payment for the festival can be made by credit card at .  The entry fee is $375 prior to September 1st and will be $475 after that.

The Huntsville Rugby Club hopes that you and your team will join us this as we "Try for the Cure!"
