As confirmed by USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville, the organization is building on its model of hiring coaches for specific areas of play, who then work with various national teams and in clinics and development roles around the country.
Luke Gross and, for a few years, Bill LeClerc, have worked those jobs for lineout and scrum, respectively. Gross did not work with the Senior Men’s National Team, but he has worked with every other national team under the USA Rugby umbrella. Former Eagle prop Chris Osentowski has also worked in this system.
Melville said he is looking at more specialist coaches.
“We’re looking at throwing in lineouts, developing props and developing depth there, and obviously we lack 10s [flyhalves] and we are looking to bring in resources on a variety of aspects of play,” Melville said.
