It’s heating up all over the country as the first day of fall descended upon rugby in the USA. Almost 50 games were played in the top levels of D1A, D1AA, DI Men’s and Women’s Club, and the WPL. It’s still early in most schedules, but big games marked huge returns for squads.

The big "wow" match in D1A was the near upset of Navy against Mary Washington on Friday night. Down 14-0 at the half, the Midshipmen stormed back with an increased emphasis on accuracy and physicality to win 15-14. Other interesting results in D1A include a 17-17 tie between AIC and Fordham, Notre Dame’s 33-28 defeat of Ohio State, Army beating Iona 29-19, Colorado takes the rivalry match against Colorado State 20-17, and NDC and SBU winning in the Rugby East.

In D1AA, Towson, Mount St. Mary’s, and Virginia Tech won in competitive matches in the Chesapeake; Penn, Yale, and Dartmouth put up big numbers in the Ivy; West Chester, Rowan, and Pitt were victorious in the Mid-Atlantic; Kennesaw State and South Carolina prevailed in the SCRC.

The most significant result of the third weekend of play in DI Men’s club saw Old Blue beat Life, 33-27, on the road in Georgia. Old Blue was down early but took the lead before halftime. Life came back for the 27-26 lead in the 72nd minute, but the New Yorkers responded immediately with a try and held on for the win. The other result in the ARP had NYAC outscore Mystic River, 40-32.

In a somewhat surprising outcome, Norfolk tied Potomac in the Mid-Atlantic, meanwhile, Pittsburgh and the Washington Irish took care of business against Schuylkill River and NOVA. In the Midwest, Metropolis withstood a big test from Palmer for a three-point win, the Chicago Griffins beat Columbus, the Detroit Tradesmen pushed its record to 3-0 by edging Cincinnati, and Kansas City outlasted Milwaukee 39-33.

In the WPL, there were three matches that were never in doubt and one nail-biter. Atlanta, Twin Cities, and San Diego cruised in wins at home and ORSU came back on the final play to beat Chicago North Shore, 26-24. Lastly, in the second match of Women's DI Club, Philadelphia blew out its second opponent by cracking Boston, 64-7.
