The Austin Blacks weren't too happy with how they started their Texas DI club season, but they are pretty happy with Saturday's effort, which turned out to be a 24-0 shutout of The Woodlands.
"Keeping them to zero was what we were really most pleased with," said Coach Steve Corcoran, overseeing the squad in place of absent Head Coach Lachlan Ferguson. "We have been working on our defense for a while. They got to our tryline a couple of times, but we held them out through five, six, seven phases."
Back from injury David Goss was a shining light for Austin's defensive effort in the backs, while Sammy Areias and Troy Mussey were the best defenders in the forwards.
Curtis Chaffin was named Man of the Match.
"Curtis had a hand in every try we scored," said Corcoran. "But it was about the defense. A lot of times they just couldn't break through, and they'd recycle the ball a few times and kick, because our guys were just stopping them. When they did get close, our guys didn't give up."
The Dallas Harlequins beat Fort Worth 44-17, and HARC beat the Dallas Reds 29-15 to round out the Texas DI results.
