Old Blue won against in the Empire DI club league, and opened themselves up to being caught by not getting four tries. Good news for Old Blue, Buffalo didn't get four tries, either.
Old Blue edged a steadily improving White Plains team 19-17 Saturday - White Plains had a late penalty that could have won the game, but the wind push the kick wide - while Buffalo battled to a 15-10 victory over Monmouth. Both teams are now 5-0 in league play.
"I would like to say how proud I am of Buffalo Rugby Club right now," said Buffalo RFC president Dave Cieslik. "Just two years ago we were competing in DII and DIII and right now the club is a combined 8-2 at DI and DII level."
White Plains got a bonus point for a close loss, and sits third at 3-2.
Monmouth and Village Lions - 53-25 winners over Morris - are tied at 2-3
with 11 standings points. The Lions have a slightly better points
different. Also at 2-3 is New York, winners over Long Island.
Suddenly only two weeks remains in the Empire regular season. The Lions, facing Long Island and New York, could end up with a winning record - not bad for a team that hadn't won a DI league game in 17 years. Buffalo and Old Blue look set for a clash October 20 in the Nickel City. That game will decide the winner of the league.
White Plains can't give up hope, though. If either of the lead teams falter next week, and then lose again the week after, White Plains, with all their bonus points (six in all), and a relatively easy remaining schedule, could get to second.
