The Tempe Rugby Club defeated Scottsdale 14-6 Saturday in DII club action in Arizona, securing Tempe atop the Arizona DII league with a 4-0 record.

Scottsdale went into the match in second place at 2-1, and battled Tempe throughout. The teams were deadlocked 6-6 at halftime, and Tempe only got some breathing room when Prop Ruben Villegas bulled over for the only try of the game.

Tempe were without Ryan Thompson (broken hand) and lost Chris Iosefo early and another back later on, throwing their threequarter line into a little disarray. But, said club president Brandon Thompson, the Tempe club toughed it out.

"It was a good effort, but in the end it was one of those situations where you didn't play all that well, but you're just happy to get the W," he said.

Perhaps disappointed not to get even a close-loss bonus point, Scottsdale Coach Brad Filgas said he was pleased with how his team battled.

"It was a good game, a good tough game, and we had a bunch of young guys in the game," he said. "Tempe just had a little bit more."
