A look at some of the 7s tournaments held this coming weekend.

Miami-Leka Memorial 7s tournament

The Miami Rugby Club is hosting the Miami-Leka Memorial rugby tournament. An ardent supporter of rugby, Philippe’s “Fiji” Leka’s life was cut tragically short due to a fatal injury he suffered while playing for the Milwaukee Harlequins.  Mr. Leka helped carry the Miami RFC to a national ranking of 12th prior to moving to moving back to Milwaukee in preparation for the birth of his first child.  Shortly after the birth of a baby girl, “Fiji” suffered a broken neck and sadly passed away a week later, leaving behind his wife and infant child. As brothers in rugby, the Miami RFC hopes to carry on his legacy by throwing a tournament in his honor.  All proceeds from the tournament will be given to Philippe’s wife and child.  The tournament takes place at Amelia Earhart Park from 10AM to 5PM.

Midnight 7s

Sponsored by 360 Sports Agency, Old Blue Rugby Club is hosting a six-team round-robin, with the winner claiming a $3,500 grand prize.  Second and third place taking $1,500 and $1,000 respectively, making for a competitive  tournament.  The field consists on two Olympic Development Academies, New England and Empire Rugby, as well as Old Blue, Schuylkill River Exiles and 1823.  (The New England ODA is entering two teams making the field six.) With three teams from the Division one top 25, (1823 currently #3, Schuylkill #10, Old Blue #12) there is certain to be a fierce battle to take home that top prize money.  The competition will begin at 4PM at Randall’s Island in Manhattan.

Tri-State 7s

At Kenosia Park, in Danbury Conn., the Tri-State 7s is full of rugby. The NJ Blaze and Greenwich RFC will square off in a two-team U15 bracket while 13 teams will clash in the boy’s high school competition.  The Tri-State will also feature a girl’s high school and a women’s bracket.  Rounding out the tournament is the Men’s social/College and the Men’s Club pools.  Overall, there will be over 40 teams in Danbury making for a great weekend of rugby.

Great Lakes 7s

An all-high-school affair, the Great Lakes 7s tournament is taking place at the Chicago Blaze Rugby Grounds.  Hosted by the Illinois Youth Rugby Association, the tournament guarantees all participating teams three games.  All participating athletes must be in high school or have graduated high school no earlier than 2013.
