A record setting 109,000 fans attended Cape Town Stadium (Capacity 55,000) this past weekend for the second sevens tournament held in that South African City. (Prior, the event was held in Elizabeth in a smaller venue). Admittedly, the fans came for two-days to root for the Blitzboks to win their second straight tournament (Dubai, last weekend), and also to defend their 2015 Cape Town tournament crown.
But England dashed home town hopes by defeating host South Africa 19-17 to win the second round of the 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Blitzbok Justin Geduld missed a conversion after a South African try at the final whistle.
England now own a gold and bronze medal in this sevens series. South Africa are top of the table with a gold and silver performance.
