The Eagles fell short of a Plate victory, losing to Australia 21-17 on the third day of the Hong Kong tournament. Fiji defeated New Zealand (again) to take the Cup trophy and pick up the 22 points that go with the victory.
The Eagles lead at the break after tries by Andre Durutolo and an intercept try from Perry Baker. But the Wallabies - enjoying a successful sevens year, ranked fourth - rallied in the second half despite a late minute try by Madison Hughes.
South Africa defeated a rejuvenated Samoa (scolded by its President) for third place, while France beat Scotland for the Bowl.
The Eagles finished 3-2-1 in the event, beating Kenya, Wales, and Argentina, losing to Samoa and Australia, and tying with England in the initial pool play.
1. South Africa 110
2. Fiji 108
3. New Zealand 107
4. Australia 84
5. England 78
6. Argentina 64
7. USA 63
Another good result for Mike Friday's Eagles with closely contested losses. But if Samoa has reawakened, then watch for more difficult games for all of their opponents as the circuit moves to Tokyo next.
