A Fiji developmental side won the first South American 7s, beating Argentina 19-6 in Viña del Mar, Chile. Los Pumas had beaten Fiji the week earlier in Uruguay. Fiji took the title on points differential.
More importantly, Uruguay and Chile qualified to play in the Las Vegas 7s (March 3,4, and 5), Vancouver (March 11, 12) and the Hong Kong 7s event in April.
The USA Falcons, comprised of young players who had little time to practice together, finished 7th in the Chilean event, beating Brazil 14-7. The USA went 1-2 in pool play, defeating Brazil, and being shut out by Uruguay and Argentina.
