Last weekend marked the annual Tobago International 7s Rugby Tournament.
The US had a strong presence with all six teams (3 women and 3 men), finishing in the top six places during the two-day event.
In their first tournament debut, the women Stars A’s claimed the tournament title and a cash purse of $6,000, while Atlantis women walked away with second place and $3,000.
The Stars men earned second place which carried a $1,500 prize. NY 7’s finished third for a cash prize of $500 and Atlantis men finished fourth while the women Stars B’s finished sixth, rounding out a very successful weekend for the US contingent.
During pool play, the women Stars A’s lost only to Atlantis (who went undefeated until the final) to move forward in cup competition. Both teams faced tough matches in the semifinals but managed wins to meet in the final. In a close contest, the Stars edged out Atlantis 7-5, winning their first ever tournament. The Stars B’s lost two pool matches, advanced through to the plate final and finished in sixth place.
In the Men’s competition, the Stars closed out pool play undefeated, advancing in the cup bracket. In the final they lost to Esher, a touring team from England, 19-14. It was an American showdown for third place, as NY 7’s edged out Atlantis, 19-10.
Kimber Rozier of Atlantis received the Chantal Maclean Memorial Trophy for being recognized as the tournament’s Best Female Player.
