The Village Lions from New York City won the second, unofficial Division II Women Championship. The 2002 tournament was played in Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Wolfhound RFC’s pitches.

The Lions route to the event started with wins in Northeast RFU playoffs against Burlington, Vermont, and Ithaca, New York.

The finals consisted of three fifteens competing in a one-day, round robin format. The other two teams were the Minneapolis Menagerie and Cincinnati-Dayton, both of whom had also reached the final from preliminary, regional victories.

In the opening match, Minneapolis defeated the host Ohio side 10-7. Then, the Lions beat Minneapolis by the same score of 10-7. Cincinnati-Dayton won against the Lions 12-10, and this two-point victory would determine that the Lions won the event on point differential after the three sides ended at 1-1. The Lions managed 20 points, Cincinnati-Dayton 19, and Minneapolis 17 points. It proved an odd way to crown a championship but that was the format.

For the Village Lions, in only their second year of play, it proved a wonderful outcome, the title surpassing the goals of the young club.
