On Sunday, January 11 and Tuesday, January 13, the USA Women’s 7s Eagles will scrimmage Ireland and Canada at the USOC Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Both teams arrived into the San Diego area earlier this week.
USA Team veteran Kelly “Griff” Griffin notes that opportunities like these are tremendous for USA development. “We are very lucky to have residence at a facility where other countries want to train. It alleviates us of the challenge to have to travel as much. Having Canada and Ireland here to scrimmage is an awesome opportunity that we are preparing for and looking forward to.
The focus in training has been back to basics and fundamentals both defensively and offensively. With 2015 being the Olympic qualifying year, a greater commitment to excellence has been made by the players, coaches and staff. Head Coach Ric Suggitt commented, “Each of us must hold the ourselves and the others accountable and continue to raise the bar in order to reach our goal of qualifying and ultimately medaling.“
Team USA’s minimal goal for each tournament during the 2014-2015 WSWS is to finish in the top 4 and irrefutably qualify for Rio 2016 through the series. Griffin noted that although they did not meet this goal in Dubai, there is still opportunity for a top four finish this 2015 season.
Round two of the Women’s Sevens World Series takes place February 7-8 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Team USA will face off against New Zealand, France and Spain in pool play.
Come on out Sunday and Tuesday to cheer on the women as they prep for Olympics 2016.
