The South African Women’s Rugby team – affectionately known as the Bokkies – prepares for its third appearance in the WRWC. No international women’s side suffers from comparison to the men’s XV as do these South African women, whose losing record against other participants in this year’s cup is 7-22.
Although recent initiatives within the country have concentrated on current and future development of women’s rugby, to date, the team has not yet produced players capable of winning against the major nations.
The Coach, Lawrence Sephaka, has voiced enthusiasm about the team’s play in the Cup, but, in reality, it will be a learning experience for the team when play begins August 1.
As a tune up to the WRWC, the Bokkies lost badly to France 46-8 in July and to the Nomads (Women’s Barbarians) 20-5 in June.
