Ireland upset New Zealand 17-14 in one of the most dramatic victories in Women’s RWC history. The Irish XV, playing with verve and savvy, beat the Black Ferns for the first time. Ireland, a third place finisher in this year’s Six Nations Championship, used the kicking skills of Niamh Briggs. New Zealand led 8-7 at the break. This marked the first WRWC loss for New Zealand since 1991.
Ireland rest alone on top of Pool B with an easy game against Kazakhstan to end the tournament on Saturday. Whether the Irish will be seeded first, second, or third in the semi-final round will be determined by game points and bonus points this Saturday, August 9.
Can this historic Irish win be credited to the team’s spirited play for Coach Phil Doyle who will retire after the tournament?
