In 2005, at the beautiful Stanford University rugby complex, Highland RFC from Salt Lake City, Utah, defeated Elsie Allen from Santa Rosa, California, 48-13. Highland won their 16th National High School Championship in the 21-years of the season end tournament.
Highland was coached by Larry Gelwix. The side is comprised of players from four different high schools in the Salt Lake region. Elsie Allen’s players come mainly from the one high school.
Elsie Allen were seeded first, and they advanced to the final by first beating the Kansas City Junior Blues (31-7) and Penn HS (Indiana) in the most competitive match of the event, winning 10-7. Highland was seeded second and its path to the finals included an initial victory 51-7 over Cathedral, followed by a 27-10 win against the Dallas Harlequins.
In the final, Highland scored first and scored often, going ahead 22-8 at the break. The second half was a repeat of the first with Highland adding on 26 points, and ceding only a try to Elsie Allen.
Third place went to Penn, which beat Dallas 19-0.
The venue at Stanford received rave reviews as it represented the perfect indoor and outdoor areas to hold national championships.
In the Tier B National High School Championship, Brownsburg HS, Indiana, defeated the St Louis Druids, 20-17. The LA Cougars beat Xavier of New York City 20-12 for third place.
