Sean Rafferty carrying the ball for Northeast ODA at the LVI

Long Island was very effective at the start of the 2013 summer 7s season, but they started to fall apart midway through the season as their numbers dwindled due to injuries and unavailability. Long Island has already begun their 7s season by participating in Lehigh Valley 7s lat weekend, defeating a tough Maryland Exiles side in the semifinals before falling to Schuylkill River in the final.

Long Island will also be attending Rockaway 7s this weekend. Coming into the Northeast Qualifiers with two preseason tournaments completed will prove very valuable to this Long Island team.

“We are looking forward to the competition in the NRU 7s series," said head coach Jerry Mirro. "We think every weekend will bring a war with each game. The boys are excited and looking forward to it.”

Coaching Staff: Head Sevens Coach - Jerry Mirro, Assistant Coach - Brendan McDermott

Returning Players to Watch
Sean Rafferty: Sean has been with Jerry Mirro for a few years now after graduating through the Stony Brook Rugby program, where Mirro also coaches. Sean is a large, well-built prop who is a great physical presence on the sevens pitch. He is a strong ball carrier who can also contest restarts.

Franco Delisa: Franco, a Syracuse graduate, will be suiting up for Long Island Sevens for his fourth season and Jerry Mirro expects him to be a standout this year. His 6’6”, 250-pound frame will prove useful in lineouts as well as the contact area.

Anthony Russo: Russo will be playing in the back line for Long Island this summer. He is coming off of an excellent performance at the Lehigh Valley 7s where he was unstoppable as a ball carrier. Look for Russo to be a top scorer for this Long Island squad.

Keith Browe: Keith has suffered injuries the past two summers keeping him out of sevens play; however, he also had a great showing at Lehigh Valley this past weekend. He is another dominant ball carrier that should be a great threat in attack for Long Island.

Notable New Players
Phil Salter: Phil will be a junior at Stony Brook next fall and is coming off of a great college season. He will be featured in the forwards for Long Island.

Brian Michel: Brian is another junior at Stony Brook who will be featured in the centers this year.

Notable Players that will NOT be returning this season
Mike St. Claire: Playing for Old Blue
Jon Feldman: Playing for Boston Prime
