The University of California travels to Salt Lake City this weekend to face
Pac-12 rival Utah on Saturday. Kickoff is 1pm at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The match is a big day on Cal’s schedule, with the Bears having pulled out
of D1-A, they see every game as a test of their standing in the rugby
world, and, more importantly, the Pac-12.
Utah has the D1-A... Read More

The Santa Barbara Rugby Academy is no longer just UCSB’s
B-side. Coached by the same staff and run through the same rigorous
training sessions as the Gauchos, Santa Barbara City College now has a
full-fledged team playing in Southern California‘s DII league, and it’s
pretty darned good.
“We’ve expanded. We have 28 guys as part of the team. About 24 of those

(Update: the original run of this article said there was one independent
team competing in DI-AA this season. That's incorrect, as New Mexico has
been playing DII. Additionally, the author didn't originally consider the
Southeastern playoff structure. Four teams advance to the SCRC playoffs in
April.)

Cal Poly’s victory over Cal on Saturday was the first time since 2004 that
the Cal Bears lost a non-playoff game to a US-based college.
Oddly, that time it was Cal Poly, too. Cal ran out a second side against an
outstanding Cal Poly outfit in a friendly, losing the game but gaining
valuable insight into the team they would ultimately play (and beat) in the
2004 national final... Read More

BYU won their second match against a Super League squad, following up
January’s close win over Old Puget Sound Beach with a 38-25 defeat of the
Denver Barbarians.
Certainly
BYU has had more time on the field than the men’s clubs, but still the
results are impressive. Head Coach David Smyth’s squad is an experienced
one, with the best forward pack in the nation, certainly in... Read More

It was a wild and woolly day in the Northern California college scene, even
if you discount Cal’s surprise loss to Cal Poly.
Santa Clara and Chico State played in a barnburner, with Chico escaping
43-42.
In that game, Chico ran out to a 22-0 lead after 20 minutes and led 22-7 at
halftime. Somehow Santa Clara came back, but Chico kept answering them with
enough tries to just... Read More
