The women’s 7s team stumbled to a disappointing seventh-place finish a couple of weeks ago in Dubai, the opening tournament of the Olympic-qualifying season. The United States took the Plate Final in dramatic fashion Sunday in Port Elizabeth. The Eagles jumped all over Fiji to start, scoring two tries in quick succession for a 14-0 lead, and after Fiji tied the game up in the second half, Perry Baker came on to ice the win.

The United States scored a third quality win in Port Elizabeth Sunday, knocking off Scotland, 26-19, to advance to the Plate Final. It was the USA’s third win, on the weekend, over a team that finished higher in the standings last season.

The Eagles proved a pesky out for defending World Series champion New Zealand in the Cup Quarterfinals Sunday. The All Blacks won, 28-7, but had to work very hard for their first score and led by just one score at halftime. The United States got its best win of the season in its second pool match of Port Elizabeth, downing Wales, 38-12. The game was much closer than that until the final couple of minutes, but Eagles did what they needed to do to shut the gate.

The opening match of Port Elizabeth was a nightmare for the Eagles in more ways than one – they didn’t muster a single score in the 26-0 loss, and Perry Baker was the victim of a pitch invader. Near the end of the first half, a fan ran onto the field and tackled Baker, who got to his feet and kicked the intruder.
