The University of Arizona rode a comeback to defeat Arizona State 16-10 in PAC Rugby Conference action, securing the first conference victory for the Wildcats.

“This is a big win for us, as we both were looking at perhaps securing that last at-large bid [to the DIAA playoffs],” said Arizona Head Coach Dave Sitton. “We are now 5-3, with four wins against ranked opponents.”

Arizona State started the stronger and dominated Arizona in a few areas of the game, especially the lineout.

“Their lineout was expert,” said Sitton. “We expected to win a lot of lineout ball and we didn’t.”

ASU led 7-3 at halftime and a penalty put them up 10-3 with about 30 minutes to go.

But then Arizona’s changed-up backline started to click, with Jack Arnold directing things from flyhalf, and the Wildcats began to hit the rucks a little better. Arizona scored a try to make it 10-8. Then Arnold hit a penalty to make it 11-10 Arizona. Finally Ryan Matyas sent through a grubber kick and Matt Tomasetti fly-hacked it into in-goal, where he fell on the ball to score. That sealed it at 16-10.
