The Ivy League season opened with powerhouse Dartmouth crushing visiting Cornell 61-10 at Brophy Field in Hanover. With All-American Madison Hughes at scrum half, the Big Green dominated all aspects of play against the Big Red.
Dartmouth’s well drilled XV built up an early 17-0 lead, and continued to find holes in the Cornell defense, often witnessing the centers making long runs to penetrate deep into Cornell territory.
The first hint of autumn appeared on the New Hampshire foliage with red and yellow breaking through summer’s green. Cornell traveled with A and B sides to face Dartmouth at home. Inside the spacious Corey Ford clubhouse, second team players and guests could watch a live channel television coverage from two professional teams in South Africa.
Local Dartmouth rugby alumni came out to watch the game, including Denny Goodman, ’60, and Tom Conger ’61. Goodman later played rugby in Jamaica and New Zealand, while Conger played for the Pittsburgh RFC, and also in Hawaii for many years. Both participated in 1960’s historic CBS rugby telecast when Stamford and Dartmouth (both called Indians then) played at West Point.
Dartmouth seems well on its way to another season of Ivy dominance.
