There was little action in DI over the weekend, as several teams ramp up for the ACRC Bowl Series. However, with teams in the Northwest kicking off and the SCRC playoffs, there was enough to warrant movement.
The results that garnered no changes were Central Washington beating Washington State in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference opener and Penn State drubbing Iona in the Rugby East finale.
Further down the list, we saw South Carolina avenge its lone loss of the season by winning the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference title. The Gamecocks beat Mississippi State with room to spare in Saturday's first semifinal, and Alabama upset Tennessee in overtime of the other semifinal. USC then beat the Crimson Tide in the Sunday final. Because of the loss, Tennessee falls out of the Top 25.
We may have the SCRC pegged incorrectly, giving them just one representative in the rankings. This weekend, South Carolina and Mississippi State have the chance to change the conference's perception with wins in Charlotte. That goes for everyone in the ACRC event. They're not just representing themselves, but flying their conferences flags, too.
Taking Tennessee's place this week is Western Washington. The Vikings, in addition to running a couple of 7s sides, have been competing in the British Columbia U20 league against the likes of UVic and UBC. Saturday, in their first full 15s match against an American side, they crushed Oregon State 48-7. Western is a well-organized, well-coached, deep program, and a lopsided victory over a team that was recently announced as joining DI-A signals the Vikings have rebounded after a down year in 2013/2014.
