The D1AA Chesapeake Collegiate Rugby Conference released its 2017 Fall All-Conference squad. League champion and D1AA Fall Championship Finalist Mary Washington tied with conference runner-up James Madison for the most selections with five. Maryland, Virginia Tech, Mount St. Mary’s, and Salisbury each earned three representatives and Virginia and Georgetown have two each.

On the competitiveness of the Chesapeake, conference commissioner Scott Zavrel said, “This is a tough conference as any team could win on any given weekend. We also had another nine matches with the results being within seven points. We are also excited that our second side competition also had nine matches within the seven-point threshold, so the future is bright for our clubs.”

Although the juniors dominated the list with 13 selections, the four seniors, consisting of Georgetown’s Jaryt Reed, JMU’s Matt Petrik, Virginia’s Nick Turecamo, and Salisbury’s Patrick Mullens, impressed in their final year. To close out the squad, five sophomores and six freshmen were included.

Many of the all-conference team will be on the field this Saturday as the Chesapeake Selects play Navy in Annapolis, Md. It will be a good opportunity for the best of the conference to test its mettle against a top D1A club in the Midshipmen.

Mary Washington’s five will not be with the Selects as they will be at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. on Sunday for the D1AA Fall Championship. The Mothers ripped Rowan, 43-12, in the quarterfinals and then Mothers limited the undefeated Kentucky’s potent offense to a single try in a 38-7 semifinal triumph over the Wildcats. On Sunday, Mary Washington will face St. Joseph’s with the D1AA crown at stake.
