It was a long time coming, but the 2015 September/October Dartmouth Alumni Monthly finally heralded the college’s champion rugby club with a two page color cover, and a four page narrative written by alumnus Brad Parks ’96, a novelist.
The club has won 19 Men’s Ivy League Championships, more than any other Big Green team. The XV have not lost a League match since 2007, with an impressive eight consecutive titles.
The story mixed the early 1950s’ beginnings when a spring break trip to Bermuda served as the spark to start a rugby club, continuing with the club’s historic tour to England (the first ever by a US college or club), and ending with the success of the Alex Magelby coached seven-a-side team that twice won the College Rugby Championship (CRC) in Philadelphia.
The club’s success derived from superior coaching (Magleby and now Gavin Hickie), first rate fields, electonic scoreboard, and expansive clubhouse facility at its Corey Ford Rugby complex, dedicated alumni financial support, and ruggers each season who are keen to continue the winning tradition.
Alumnus Magleby summed up the driving rugby spirit, “We ask, did we leave the program better than we found it?”
