Again, the DI-AA slate is thin, with spring break. But this weekend is huge in two conferences, and potentially big in a third.
In the South Independent, it all comes down to this weekend, as six teams still have a shot at four semifinal berths.
In the South, all eyes will be on South Florida and Florida State. The Seminoles beat the Bulls by two when they met in Tampa earlier this season. If FSU wins or ties Saturday, it’ll win the South.
USF and Central Florida trail FSU by a win, but Central will bank five points against FAU, whether the game’s played or forfeited. So, UCF is into the semis, but as what seed is still to be determined.
In the North, it’s even more muddled, with the hanging issue being that Georgia Southern and Emory have to play Saturday and Sunday.
If GSU beats Kennesaw and Emory, and Middle Tennessee beats Emory, then GSU will be No. 1 and MTSU will be No. 2. There, of course, are more scenarios.
In the Atlantic Coast, Maryland and Virginia double up, playing games on Saturday and each other on Sunday. The Terps have winless Georgia Tech and the Cavaliers tied-for-first North Carolina on Saturday.
If Maryland gets through the weekend unscathed, it will take demanding control of the league, with games against Wake Forest and North Carolina being the biggest hurdles en route to a second ACRL title.
Conversely, Wake Forest, UNC, Clemson and Virginia need to win this weekend to keep pace with Maryland.
The possibly huge game in the Southeast has Georgia traveling to Tennessee. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in league play, but if they can upset the Vols, they’re right back in the thick of a playoff and league title race.
Two rivalry games – Auburn vs. Alabama and Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State – could have consequences in the race for second in the West division.
