Division II is now in full swing with all of the conferences having gotten under way this past weekend. The Tri-State, New England Wide, Colonial Coast Northern Lights and the Great Lakes all kicked off conference action.

In the Tri-State both conference finalists last season, RPI and Molloy both came with wins against Union and the College of New Jersey. In the Colonial Coast, Coast Guard had the biggest victory, reaching the century mark against WCSU.

Minnesota-Duluth started its defense of the national title once again in the Northern Lights, but did not light up the scoreboard like it usually does. The Fighting Penguins defeated North Dakota State 36-7. A win is a win but Duluth has hardly been tested in conference play over the last several years.

The Colonial Coast saw the traditional heavy weight come up with wins in week one. Salve Regina overcame UMass-Dartmouth 27-12 and will look to defend its conference title in 2016. The conference has a bit of a new look, though as Boston University moved from the Rugby Northeast and will look to challenge Salve Regina for the top spot. BU was impressive in its first bout, beating Western New England 55-5.

Grand Valley State had a solid year last season and started this year with a 41-0 blanking of Hope. Ferris State and Oakland, who both won, will look to challenge Grand Valley in Michigan.

A few other matches were intriguing over the weekend. URI and Vermont played a rematch of last seasons NECRC final. URI won that matchup 15-7 and came up on the right side of things once again. It was another tight game with URI taking this one 28-27.

The team to keep an eye on in NECRC, however, is Norwich. The Cadets defeated URI last weekend and beat up Middlebury 30-14. It was Middlebury’s first game back in DII and Norwich came them a rude return.

Bentley continues to impress in Rugby Northeast.  After beating UMass-Lowell last week, Bentley knocked off Roger Williams 19-12. Both wins came against the conference finalists from last season, leaving Bentley as a team to watch.
