Saint Mary’s came back from a 24-19 halftime deficit to beat Cal Poly 41-31 Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The win improves the Gaels’ conference record to 6-0. With one game left to play, Saturday’s win should seal the conference title for Saint Mary’s.
Unlike the rest of the Gaels’ league wins, this one didn’t come easy, as the Mustangs were the first team to lead Saint Mary’s at halftime this season. Cal Poly utilized a strong wind at their back to build the five-point lead at intermission.
“Inspired play by Cal Poly, capitalizing well on our errors and poor tackling,” said Saint Mary’s coach Tim O’Brien. “Sound fundamental play by [Cal Poly], using a strong wind at their backs, made for quite a contest.”
The Gaels dominated the second half, reeling off 22-straight points to take a 41-24 lead before the Mustangs scored a converted try to reel Saint Mary’s closer.
“Them finding a few gears and coupling them with Saint Mary’s carelessness made for a closer finale than the scoreline indicates,” O’Brien said.
Cal Poly’s final league game is against Santa Clara, and the Gaels’ is against San Diego State.
