Kutztown University dropped to 1-3 with their third close loss of the College Premier Division season, as the Bears fell to the United States Naval Academy 24-20 in Annapolis Saturday.

Navy ran out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to tries from Matt Bova and Andrew Szoch, both converted by Matt Arnsberger.

"We looked good," said a whistful-sounding Navy Head Coach Mike Flanagan. "We had shape, we had flow. But then we kind of fell away from that and just played a really sloppy game."

Mike Cress scored for Kutztown to make it 14-5, and then Tim Acker added a penalty to put his side within six. Navy then got a yellow card, and Matt Frederick capped off a nicely-executed maul to bring KU within a point 14-13.

But Kutztown couldn't, ultimately, make playing with the man advantage pay, as Navy bounced back with a shorthanded try from Chase Burge to make it 19-13 Middies. Spencer Wilson's try put Navy up 11 at 24-13, but once again they saw KU come back. Zach Jessell's try and Acker's conversion put Kutztown with four at 24-20, but that was it.

"We were just sloppy," said Flanagan. "Kutztown worked hard and don't quit, and their forwards played well, and I guess they should feel unlucky that they lost, because I think we were lucky to win it. All I can say is we got out of this with a win and four tries."

KU Head coach Gregg Jones continues to see his team snakebit. Expecting to run his backs around the Navy D and hope his forwards would hold their own, instead Jones saw his pack produce on of their best games of the year, and the backs underperformed.

"I am very pleased with how our forwards stood up to Navy," said Jones, pointedly not mentioning his backs, who gave up two soft tries. "It might be a turning point for us."

Turning point or no, Kutztown is 1-3, but with 9 points thanks to three close-loss bonus points and two bonus points for scoring four tries (something they failed to do against Navy). They can rebound and post a creditable 4-3 record and perhaps surpass other teams with better records.

For Navy, they are now 4-0, but a dissatisfied 4-0.

"We've got to play a lot better against the teams we have coming up," said Flanagen.
