One of the top breakout players of 2012, Arkansas State’s Zac Mizell has had a rough start to 2013. He re-aggravated a pre-existing foot injury while training over the winter break and has had surgery.

Arkansas State coach Alex Houser said there’s no guarantee Mizell will make it back for his last semester of collegiate eligibility, but if he does, it won’t likely be until at least April.

The injury held Mizell out of a chance to train with the 7s Eagles in last week’s extended training camp. Mizell was invited, along with teammate Dean Gericke, but could not participate.

The Red Wolves have depth in the backline, so they will be able to cope with the loss of Mizell better than most teams. Zinzan Elan-Puttick, who exploded onto the scene at 7s Nationals last fall, could see minutes at Mizell’s spot in the midfield.

Arkansas State starts its 15s season Feb. 2nd at Texas A&M.
