The USA Naval Academy dismantled a hard-working Texas team 64-10 Saturday in Annapolis to move on to the Varsity Cup semifinals next week in Provo, Utah.
Navy hosted the game at Navy Marine Corps Stadium, but despite being at home they kept running into penalty trouble early on.
Flanker Beau Bartlett's try, with Jack McAuliffe's conversion, staked Navy to a 7-0 lead after seven minutes. Texas looked dangerous in reply but the physicality of the Navy defense set the Longhorns on their heels somewhat.
But penalties in the ruck slowed down later attacks, and it wasn't until the 20th minute when Navy scored again. The Midshipmen punished a poor clearance kick by Texas, and from a lineout deep in the Longhorn 22 sent the ball through the hands to wing Cyrus Wilson.
After that, Navy started to gallop. and hooker Joe Dipietro and No. 8 Chris Rixey scored in the second half.
Texas scored their first try in the 33rd minute after they tapped quickly on a penalty and got the ball to flyhalf Steven Taylor who dragged a Navy defender over the line.
Up 26-5 at halftime Navy pulled away in the second half, looking much the fresher team as the game wore on.
Rixey scored again, and then his loose forward mates Spencer Wilson and Beau Bartlett touched down.
Wings Brandon Willis and Alexander Johnson also scored tries before Rixey got his third. Flyhalf Jack McAuliffe added six conversions and Daniel Page one.
Texas scored their second try in much the same way as the first, punishing a Navy penalty, tapping and running, and showing good support play. This one took a few more phases and some tough work by the forwards before lock and captain Peter Hyams powered through a tackler on the wing.
Tries: Rixey 3, Bartlett 2, C Wilson, S Wilson, Dipietro, Willis, Johnson
Convs: McAuliffe 6, Page
