The Western Washington University rugby team defeated Eastern Washington 44-12 Saturday to secure a perfect 6-0 record in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference.

The game was played in front of another large crowd on campus despite the wet and cold conditions. The Vikings took the lead at the four minute mark on a try by Kevin Kinloch and never looked back. Matt Tiscornia had an excellent game, scoring three tries, while Matt Jenson added two more.

Joe Cote and Quinton Wilms also scored for the Vikings while Nick Salimano kicked two conversions.

With the win, WWU wins the west division of the NCRC and will host the first round of playoffs on April 6 and 7. WWU will play the winner of the Saturday match on the Sunday. The winner of that contest will play April 13 for the Championship.

Eric Populus scored both EWU tries and kicked a conversion, moving his league-leading try total to 15 and points total to 105.

Jensen is second in the league with nine tries, and the next five top try-scorers are all from WWU, as the Vikings are scoring almost 60 points a game, more than double the next-highest total in the league.

Also this weekend, Washington beat Boise State 36-29 behind two tries from prop Shay McElvain. Boise State wing Vince Carlos also touched down twice.

Oregon beat Western Oregon 33-20 with tries from Paul Gerard, Charlie Goldensohn, Anton Matschek, Miguel Minchin, Zach Self, and Tom Watson. The Ducks were 0-6 on conversions.

One game remains in the regular season, and it’s a big one. Washington State plays Idaho in Pullman, Wash. this coming Saturday. If Idaho wins, they take the NCRC East. Idaho can also clinch with a tie as long as they score four tries to get the bonus point. A non-bonus tie would keep Eastern Washington in 1st, as would an Idaho loss.

If Washington State wins the match, the Cougars beat out Idaho for 2nd in the NCRC East.
