Stanford defeated Santa Clara 39-18 to clinch the Northern California
conference title Saturday, thus punching their ticket to the Sweet 16 in
Santa Barbara April 30.
"I’m very proud of our team," said Cardinal coach Matt Sherman. "We had a solid performance today to beat an improved Santa Clara team, but more importantly we have made steady improvements all season to be able to win our league and now compete in the playoffs. Nonetheless, we also believe that we have far more to give, and great room to improve further, and I’m excited to see how much further we can develop until the playoffs in four weeks."
Awaiting Stanford in Santa Barbara will be either New Mexico or Northern Colorado. They play April 9 to decide the West-West title. On the other side of the Santa Barbara bracket are UC Santa Barbara, and most likely Oregon State, who has a commanding lead in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference.
