The National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) powered by Penn Mutual playoffs are almost down to the final four. While, Salve Regina already punched its ticket in the fall, the three other teams to round out the field will be determined in the coming weeks.
NSCRO is broken up into four regions, with one team heading to the Champions Cup on April 27-29.
Salve Regina won the region in the fall.
Part of the playoffs were completed in the fall with Loyola Maryland defeating Catholic University 48-27. Taking place on December 2-3 last year, the winner of the game, Loyola, had to wait until this weekend for a chance at the final four.
Loyola awaited the winner of the South Cup, which comprises the Deep South, Georgia Dixie and Florida Conferences. Loyola New Orleans out of the Deep South beat Valdosta State of Georgia while Tennessee Tech outlasted Eckerd College of Florida. Tennessee Tech bested Loyola 55-17 to capture the South Cup.
Tennessee Tech will. Now battle Loyola Maryland for the right to go to the final four.
This region is down to two teams from the fall. Iowa Central ran over everyone, scoring over 100 points in their two playoff games. IOC defeated final four team Xavier 103-3 in a strong showing.
IOC will take on Franciscan University on April 8. Franciscan took home the Central East Cup by beating Taylor University 46-17 in the fall.
This region played a majority of its games this spring and is comprised of the Lonestar, Rocky Mountain, Gold Coast and NorCal conferences. The top two from each conference advanced to the final eight in the region.
Last year’s champions, Claremont Colleges ran through a DIAA conference in route to a perfect record and the top seed out of the conference and was slated to play Santa Rosa JC but a forfeit saw the Lions advance through to the final four.
Cal Maritime won the NorCal and defeated Cal Lutheran 46-12, the second seed out of the Gold Coast, to join Claremont.
The University of Denver played Regis University in what is known as the Cowboy Cup, winning 50-31. Angelo State, like Claremont, were spared a quarterfinal game due to a forfeit from University of Dallas.
This weekend Cal Maritime will take on Angelo State while the Claremont Colleges will battle the University of Denver. The winner’s of each game will play on Sunday to determine who heads to the final four.
The National Championship will take place on April 27-29 at Life University.
