Oh, brave new world of pro rugby commercial sponsorship.

Marvel Comics, publishers of Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, the Avengers, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, the Punisher, The Defenders, S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Deadpool, Legion, etc.,  have partnered with Super Rugby in South Africa.

The initial crossover of Marvel superhero jerseys will see the Emirates Lions dressed in the the familiar Spider Man emblem, the Vodacom Bulls’ in Captain America’s colors, the Cell C Sharks attired in Black Panther gear, and the DHL Stormers as Thor.

The Director of the Walt Disney Company Africa (corporate owner of the successful Marvel stable) said, “Marvel Super Heroes are among the most loved and recognizable characters in the world, very much like local Vodacom Super Rugby players and clubs.”

There is no reason why these Marvel superheroes and their DC Comics rivals - Batman, Superman, Batwoman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, etc. - cannot also appear on other, pro league rugby jerseys.

I've sometimes thought that the Eagles 7s should have a jersey with vertical red and white stripes across the midriff, blue chest and shoulders with a white star, white lower sleeves, blue shorts, and red socks -- in other words, Captain America's uniform.
