Tournament: America’s Pacific Challenge – This weekend commences the first matches in World Rugby’s America’s Pacific Challenge, when secondary Men’s fifteens meet in Montevideo, Uruguay. The matches will see a USA Select play the Fiji Warriors, while the other games are between the Argentina XV versus Canada A, and Samoa A vs. Uruguay A. All the contests will be in Estadio Charrua.

Rugby Championship – The season continues with South Africa hosting New Zealand in Durban. The All Blacks are 5-0 and the Springboks 2-3 in this, four nation, southern hemisphere event. Of note is the other match between Argentina (1-4) and Australia (2-3) will be played at Twickenham on Saturday. It will be interesting to learn what this Test match draws when England do not play.

Argentina to Bid for 2027 RWC – The Argentina RFU intends to bid to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The official bids will come after the 2023 event, currently bid by Ireland, France, and South Africa. At one time, the Argentina RFU wanted to include the country as a stop on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens circuit, but withdrew when funding could not be secured. Japan is the RWC host in 2019.

Update on PRO Rugby – PRO Rugby CEO Doug Schoninger hopes to expand the nascent five-city league to eight teams in 2017. He is planning for a Western Conference, and a combined Midwest/East Coast Conference. No expansion cities have yet been named.

Las Vegas Invitational Registration Underway – The USA’s largest rugby event, the Las Vegas Invitational, under the aegis of former Eagle, Jon Hinkin, has started the registration process for 2017. Last year, over 250 clubs attended, the matches played on the many fields alongside Sam Boyd stadium, home to the Las Vegas Sevens.  The event, which started in San Diego in 2007, celebrates its 11th year.

Maccabi Squad Named For Israel 2017 – The Maccabi US Open Men’s Rugby Team has selected 28 players to compete in Israel next year.
