The Americans started strong in their opening match at the Youth Olympic Games against Kenya, but ultimately fell 22-12. Just a minute into the game USA prop Hanco Germishuys bullied over several opposing players. Germishuys' run sucked in several Kenyan defenders, which prompted USA to swing the ball wide to Jojo Tikoisuva, who ran 20 meters down the sideline for the try. Cian Barry converted the difficult conversion to put Team USA up 7-0.

Kenya quickly answered as their scrumhalf burned the American defense down the edge of the field for a try. Kenya converted to even the match at 7-7. The United States fought back with some shifty footwork by Barry, who was tackled about 10 meters from the try line. He then popped off the ground to Germishuys, who bowled over for the try.

After the following kickoff, a scary moment took place when Barry went down due to a shoulder injury, which will unfortunately end his Youth Olympic Games prematurely. Kenya took advantage and scored a try just before half, leaving the United States with the 12-10 lead.

The second half was all about Kenya, as they recorded two tries and one conversion to secure the 22-10 victory. The American boys fought tough, and certainly looked like the dominant team in the first half. Kenya’s speed, however, proved too much for Team USA. In the other pool matches, Fiji made their mark as the team to beat with a convincing 31-5 victory over Japan. Argentina narrowly defeated France by a score of 19-17.
