Classic Eagle flyhalf Leif Gibson was injured in an off-the-ball hit during the USA’s 43-10 loss to South Africa Saturday at the World Rugby Classic in the Bahamas. Gibson was carted off the field on a stretcher after South African prop Robbie Kempson knocked him down.

Gibson was treated at a local hospital and fitted with a neck brace to travel home in. Kempson was arrested and held for 12 hours while police investigated the incident. Kempson has been released on bail and will have to return to the police station Thursday for further word. He will not compete the rest of the tournament.

The Classic Eagles take the field again Wednesday for the Plate semifinal against France. South Africa takes on Argentina in the Cup semifinal.
