The United States earned a quarterfinal bid in the Sao Paolo 7s thanks to a 33-0 shutout over Spain. The Eagles continued the strong defensive pressure from the prior game, and with three second half tries, pulled away from the Spanish.

Like the Russia game, the Eagles got off to a slow start. The United States knocked-on the opening kickoff and committed two penalties in the first three minutes of the game. Spain was on the doorstep to get the first score when Rachel Griendling stole the ball in a ruck. She dished the ball to Megan Bonny and received a pass back. Griendling took the pass the length of the field for her second of the day.

Spain continued to probe the Eagle defense because of several knocks, but the United States remained strong. It looked like the Eagles would go into the break up 7-0, but Alev Kelter intercepted a pas after the hooter to extend the lead to 14-0.

After two minutes of the second half, Kristen Thomas extended the lead to 21-0. The winger got some space out wide and finished an unconverted try. The Eagles added two more tries late in the match to secure the victory.

With the 33-0 victory, the Eagles clinched a spot in the Cup Quarters. They will take on England at 10:28AM EST tomorrow.
