The Eagles looked like they could have pulled away a couple times in their Adelaide Bowl Quarterfinal against Japan, but instead they needed a heroic try from Paul Emerick just to pull out the victory.

USA jumped out to a 10-0 lead with two Zach Test tries within the first five minutes. Both conversions were missed. Japan sneaked in a try just before halftime (6:58) to pull the Eagles back within reach at 10-7. In the second half, the Eagles again attempted to separate themselves with a Colin Hawley try just 30 seconds out of intermission, and again the conversion was missed.

Japan answered back with a converted try from Lepuha Letuila to pull within one. They then subbed on Sione Faamao Teaupa, who scored seconds later to put Japan up 19-15. four minutes went by before Emerick saved the Eagles' IRB point-scoring hopes with a try in extra time. Suniula made the conversion to give USA the dramatic 22-19 win.

USA advances to the Bowl Semifinal, where they take on Scotland, who downed the Cook Islands in their quarterfinal, at 1:20am Eastern.
