Gary Gold made his first-ever tour selections as Team USA’s head coach Tuesday, announcing his 30-man squad for the June tests. Team USA will play Russia June 9 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Scotland June 16 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston and Canada June 23 at Wanderers Grounds in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

There are two major milestones in the roster announcement, one being the selection of an entirely professional squad. Even in 2016, the only other year in which there’s been professional 15s in America, an entirely professional touring squad was never selected. All domestically-based players were selected off Major League Rugby rosters.

There is also notably two weeks built into the front end of the assembly, giving the Eagles an extra week together than normal. Usually they have just five days together before their first test on a tour. This time they come together May 27th and don’t hit the pitch for 13 more days.

Two potential new caps are on offer for Paul Mullen, 26, and Callum Black, 32, two Irish props looking to make their senior international debuts. Mullen is a former age-grade All-American who worked his way through Munster’s age-grade teams. Both he and Black also represented Ireland at various age-grade levels.

Black is a 13-year veteran, having split his professional career between Worcester and Ulster. At Worcester, he is a teammate of hooker Joe Taufete’e, also in the squad.

Returning after missing the Americas Rugby Championship are Eric Fry, AJ MacGinty, Samu Manoa, Olive Kilifi, Siaosi Mahoni, John Quill and David Tameilau. They’ll bolster the two-time defending ARC champion squad.
