Head coach John Mitchell and USA Rugby's high performance staff is introducing a new platform for keeping potential Eagle selections fit and downloaded with the team's information, and it's called the Eagles Elite Training Squad (EETS). It's supplemented by another group called the Eagles Elite Development Squad (EETD). Mitchell's first squads were announced Friday.

"We are kidding ourselves if we think we are as fit as we can be, so we have to find a way to bridge our gap in 15s to realistically and authentically compete against Tier One nations," said Mitchell. "We cannot do this without creating a model by where the players take greater ownership for targeting and raising their standards in their total distance covered and high velocity speed percentages daily. We need to find better ways to help the player implement to be in the optimal zone daily through guidance, supervision, and updating their daily work and volume."

In the past, basic information such as plays, a glossary of verbiage, etc., would be emailed out to a player group prior to a camp. Then, typically a week leading into a match, the players would convene and try and put that information together on the field. Through the EETS, Mitchell and the high performance staff hope to create and maintain an ongoing dialogue of data that will have players better prepared between assemblies.

"The past has been very much about the inputs in test week only," said Mitchell. "The Eagles Elite Training Squad's intention is more about the whole of the inputs and the discipline necessary to their preparation before test week so that, in a test match preparation, we can prepare with the right intensity and training load to bring the right performance.

Being excluded from the EETS does not preclude a player from being selected, though it would certainly seem being in the squad would make a player more visible to the coaching staff. The plan is to name a squad bi-annually during a World Cup cycle. The current squads are named through June.

Below are both lists. The first one is the EETS, and the second one the EEDS.
