USA head coach Mike Tolkin has pared a 50-man camp down to a 28-man traveling squad for Saturday's test against Scotland at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. There are few surprises in the selections.
Three players with recent caps were left off the traveling squad - hooker Zach Fenoglio and locks Graham Harriman and Brian Doyle. Fenoglio had been battling Coolican for the second-place spot on the team's depth chart for some time, and Tolkin picked Coolican this time. Not necessarily a big surprise, but somewhat unexpected.
The team's depth at second row, including the littany of back-row guys who can cover in the engine room, was unprecedented in this camp. Good players were going to be left at home, and Doyle and Harriman happened to be those guys.
Ben Pinkelman, Brett Thompson, Garrett Brewer, Nate Augspurger, TC Elliott, Nick Civetta and Matt Trouville came into a deep camp uncapped, and they'll remain so. It is somewhat telling that Augspurger wasn't taken considering the lack of depth at scrumhalf. Presumably, Shalom Suniula will be Mike Petri's cover at that position.
Tolkin will name a 23-man game day roster to face Scotland later this week.
