The Eagles opened London 7s with a 31-17 loss to Samoa after conceding a big deficit early and storming back to level.

Manu Samoa started the game with three-straight tries, one converted, to take a 17-0 lead before the Eagles found any offense.

Putting the USA on the board was Zach Test in the fifth minute. Tai Enosa nailed the conversion. Test, the USA's all-time 7s try leader who sat out the second day of Glasgow 7s last week with an injury, scored the Eagles second try, too. This time the conversion was missed, but a big deficit was nearly erased, with the Eagles trailing 17-12 at the break.

Colin Hawley pulled the USA level in the opening minute of the second half with a try, but Shalom Suniula's conversion attempt was missed, leaving the game tied 17-17.

Samoa reclaimed the lead for good when Tom Iosefo dotted down in the 11th minute. The Eagles brought on try machine Rocco Mauer and Nu'u Punimata midway through the second half, but the Eagles wouldn't score again and Samoa ran in another converted try in extra time to seal the win.

Up next for the USA is England, followed by France.
