The United States lost 12-0 in a hard fought battle with China. About three minutes into the match USA winger Appau Mailau went down with an ankle injury, and Whitney Wilson subbed in. The match was a defensive battle that entered halftime scoreless. The USA continued to absorb a potent Chinese attack, until a United States knock on led to a defensive scrum in their own half. China took advantage and split the American backline. They converted to take a 7-0 lead. Moments later, Danielle Walko-Siua was taken off for injury, and Tiffany Person replaced. Additionally, Becca Jane Rosko moved into scrumhalf, pushing Captain and starting scrumhalf Tess Feury into the centers. USA had one last opportunity to tie the match with an attacking scrum on their own five-meter line, but pressure in the scrum disallowed the Americans to move the ball wide. Team USA turned the ball over in the breakdown, and China touched down to secure the 12-0 victory. The American players were still proud of their efforts in the Chinese game, despite the loss. “The game was awesome,” says Walko-Siua. “We all worked as a team and flowed the ball real well.”

Considering Team USA lost 29-5 to China during pool play, a close 12-0 loss is a drastic improvement for the Americans. “It’s been pretty incredible watching us develop the past five days throughout the tournament,” says USA Prop Emily Prentice. “Going down on the second day with an injury is frustrating, but my team really helped out and being able to watch us play as a team this last game made it easier. I think that everyone has something to be proud of because we all played well. For the amount of time that we were together and did the best that we could.”

The Youth Olympics as a whole was a success from the perspective sof Team USA. “I think this experience is great for all the girls,” USA Prop Haley Langan remarks. “We have met a ton of people from around the world as well as our teammates from different parts of the United States.”

In the Gold Medal match for the Girls Division Australia defeated Canada 28-10. In the Boys division, Fiji triumphed over Kenya 12-0 for Bronze and France shocked Argentina 45-22 for Gold.
