The Boys and Girls USA Youth Olympic 7s squads have arrived safely in Shanghai, China and are in route to Nanjing to commence their preparation for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games. The 2014 YOG feature 27 sports and host over 3,500 athletes from over 200 nations.
Team USA has only a few short days to gel as a unit before they step onto the pitch in an effort to bring home a medal. The Opening Ceremonies are set to begin this Saturday, August 16th at 8pm at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center Stadium. This beautiful facility was built in 2005, occupying 896,000 square meters with 400,000 square meters of floor space.
The following morning, the competition begins for the American Rugby 7s Teams. Preliminary matches will be held from August 17th until August 19th, with the medal-matches taking place on Wednesday, August 20th.
The event hosts 144 rugby athletes, 72 men and 72 women. There will be six teams in each of the boys and girls divisions. Implicitly, as long as USA can finish in the top half of the field, they will earn themselves a medal.
Upon culmination of the rugby portion of the games, the American teams will continue to board at the Youth Olympic Village to participate in cultural events, while continuing their support of the other American athletes. The athletes will conclude their experience with the Closing Ceremonies on Thursday, August 28th at 8pm.
Rugby Today will provide exclusive coverage of the games and will be on site for the entirety of all Rugby 7s events. Continue to check it for updates on preparation, schedules, results, and more.
